The Sangiri pattern can be achieved by putting the item in a corner of the kiln or into the shadow of another item, so that it's wreathed in smoke and doesn't come in direct contact with flames or ash. It can be made artificially by putting in charcoal and then burning it. And when pottery is fired with rice straw coiled around it, the straw leaves brilliant scarlet lines. This is called Hidasuki. Both types have a coarse surface, but become smooth when using them for a long time.
